New data shows significant improvements in road safety in London since the introduction of 20mph speed limits
Although it can sometimes feel frustrating, and it can be difficult to drive at 20mph it has had a huge impact on lowering death and injuries on London roads.
Roadwise statistics on deaths at different speeds say:
- at 40 mph there is a 90 percent chance they will be killed.
- at 35 mph there is a 50 percent chance they will be killed.
- at 30 mph there is a 20 percent chance they will be killed.
- at 20 mph there is a 2.5 percent chance they will be killed.
“Sadly more than 4,000 people are killed and seriously injured on London’s roads every year. Lowering speeds is one of the most important things we can do to reduce road danger and make it easier and safer for people to walk, cycle and use public transport, creating a safer, greener London for everyone.”
Will Norman, London’s Walking & Cycling Commissioner
